How content is organized?

Friday, 11 July 2008

In Elxis you can organize content either using an Hierarchical structure or Autonomous pages. A combination of these two ways is also possible. You can use both ways at the same time. In Hierarchical structure the content is organized in Sections -> Categories -> Content Items (articles). You can afterwards create menu items that link to any of these elements and specify how each page will be displayed (section table, category table, section blog etc). Autonomous pages are content items that do not belong to a Section/Category structure. They are independent. You can think of them as single HTML pages. You can create as many as you need and then organize through the proper menu structure.

How can I control the appearance of Home Page?

Friday, 11 July 2008

Home Page is the first content that your visitors see. There is a simple rule on deciding what will be that content. Connect to the administration panel and select Menu -> mainmenu. You will see the list of menu items that form this menu. The first menu item is the one that will be displayed as your front page content. So, if you choose to be the Frontpage component (default option), then your front page will be a list of the articles you selected to appear on front page. If you decide to be something else, like a menu item of type "Table - Content Section", that will be the first content your visitors will see. In every case, you can control further the appearance, by modifying the parameteres associated with the first menu item.

What are the Autonomous Pages?

Friday, 11 July 2008

Autonomous Pages are content items that are not part of a Section or a Category. Autonomous Pages cannot be added to a Blog, a Section or a Category. Autonomous Pages, in other words, are independent, stand alone pages. They can be created, edited and deleted in the Autonomous Pages Manager. In the sample content you have installed with Elxis, the Main Menu choice "The Elxis License" shows an example of an Autonomous Page.

Editing Content

Friday, 11 July 2008

Editing content with Elxis is easy. Elxis comes with one of the best WYSIWYG editors in the world. The TinyMCE, developed from Moxiecode. Of course that editor, was adapted in order to work with Elxis, but it retains all its functionality. More over, you can control its appearance and decide what features you want to be active. To do so, login to the administration panel and go to Bots -> Site bots -> TinyMCE WYSIWYG Editor. From there, you can control all the settings of the editor.

Do I have to keep this sample content?

Friday, 11 July 2008

No. This sample content appears because it was selected as an option during the installation process. The information contained in the site is intended to assist new users in learning the system and to help them get started using Elxis immediately. We have inserted the content using a variety of formats and options to help users get some idea of the choices available to them. You may delete any of this content without causing any problems to the site installation.

Users and user groups

Friday, 11 July 2008

Elxis has an hierarhical structure of user groups. In each user group a set of permissions is assigned. You can add, edit or delete user groups as well as set their permissions over elxis via the Access manager. Access manager is a very powerfull feature that you have to use wisely and with caution if you do not want to make your site disfunctional. By default Elxis comes with the following predefined user groups:

Access only to Front-end

  • Public Frontend. Every visitor belongs to that group.
  • Registered. Users that registered to your site can have access to content that was invisible to "Public Frontend" group. They can also submit content or web links from the Front-end, manage their profile and view the users list.
  • Author. Authors have all the rights that a Registered User has, plus more.
  • Editor. Editors have all the rights that an Author has, plus more.
  • Publisher Publishers have all the rights that an Editor has, plus more.

Access to Backend

  • Public Backend. Every visitor to the administration login form belongs to that group.
  • Manager. Managers have access to Back End but limited responsibilities. They have access to: Media manager, statistics, edit current menus but not add new ones, edit content.
  • Administrator. Administrators have access to backend with less limitations than Managers. They have access to all functions Managers have, plus: Trash Manager, User Manager (cannot add new users), create new menus, manage components, modules and bots.
  • Super Administrator. Super Administrators are the higher level accounts. They have full access to all functions of administration panel.

How do I enable SEO PRO?

Friday, 11 July 2008

The enablement of Elxis SEO PRO is a piece of cake! Go to global configuration and under the SEO tab select "SEO PRO" as the SEO mechanism to use. In your Elxis root folder there is a file called htaccess.txt. Open this file and set the proper value for the RewriteBase (if Elxis is in your www root folder then it should be just a slash "/" ). Rename this file to .htaccess. Thats it! Notice that Elxis SEO PRO can also be used under the IIS webserver. In this case IIS should be equiped with Ionic Isapi Re-writter filter.
